A gut renovation and addition to a carriage house on a landmarked Brooklyn Heights alley called for rigorous coordination between the architectural design and the structural, mechanical, and plumbing systems. Maintaining all duct and plumbing risers within a narrow chase, working with a minimal floor to ceiling sandwich for all required ductwork and structural steel, and keeping to a bare minimum the number of soffits, were some of the many challenges involved in attaining a fluid end result that respected the historic nature of the shell, yet invited in the all the comforts of the modern world.
